Across six seasons that span nearly 60 years, The Crown has been as much a study in fashion as it has been in history.

To mark the arrival of the show’s final chapter, an exhibition of original costumes was unveiled during the season 6, part 2 premiere reception on Dec. 5 at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Curators Amy Roberts and Sidonie Roberts — who led the costume work from seasons 3 through 6 — assembled 24 outfits drawn from the series’ extensive wardrobe archive.

The selection ranges from intimate daytime garments to the most ceremonial frocks, each piece worn on screen by different characters across all six seasons.

Early-season designer Michele Clapton contributed key objects, including the Queen’s coronation robe and a pair of 1950s evening gowns created for Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, intended to chart Elizabeth’s evolution through clothing.

Organizers say the display highlights more than changing silhouettes and fabrics; it underscores the contrast between private moments and the public pageantry surrounding the royal household.

Visitors can see simple at-home dresses from season 1, a practical riding habit from season 2, and the relaxed, modern looks associated with outsiders like Diana and Kate in seasons 5 and 6.

Opposite those quieter pieces are bold, theatrical costumes designed to read onstage and on-camera — a reminder that much of royal life is performed for an audience.

As season 2 costume designer Jane Petrie put it, the monarchy’s visual language is part spectacle, part ritual, and the exhibition makes that performance tangible.
