Royal Fashion Through the Ages – The Crown’s Iconic Costumes
Royal Fashion Through the Ages
Across six seasons that span nearly 60 years, The Crown has been as much a study in fashion as it has been in history.
To mark the arrival of the show’s final chapter, an exhibition of original costumes was unveiled during the season 6, part 2 premiere reception on Dec. 5 at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Curators Amy Roberts and Sidonie Roberts — who led the costume work from seasons 3 through 6 — assembled 24 outfits drawn from the series’ extensive wardrobe archive.
The selection ranges from intimate daytime garments to the most ceremonial frocks, each piece worn on screen by different characters across all six seasons.
Early-season designer Michele Clapton contributed key objects, including the Queen’s coronation robe and a pair of 1950s evening gowns created for Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, intended to chart Elizabeth’s evolution through clothing.
Organizers say the display highlights more than changing silhouettes and fabrics; it underscores the contrast between private moments and the public pageantry surrounding the royal household.
Visitors can see simple at-home dresses from season 1, a practical riding habit from season 2, and the relaxed, modern looks associated with outsiders like Diana and Kate in seasons 5 and 6.
Opposite those quieter pieces are bold, theatrical costumes designed to read onstage and on-camera — a reminder that much of royal life is performed for an audience.
As season 2 costume designer Jane Petrie put it, the monarchy’s visual language is part spectacle, part ritual, and the exhibition makes that performance tangible.

A Royal Tapestry: Costume Evolution Throughout "The Crown"
The meticulous attention to royal fashion throughout Netflix's acclaimed series "The Crown" offers viewers a visual journey through decades of British monarchy style. From coronation regalia to casual country attire, each costume tells a story beyond mere aesthetics.
The Coronation Spectacle
Queen Elizabeth's 1953 coronation scene features exquisite detail with a beaded gown complemented by the Imperial State Crown and diamond sceptre. Costume designers chose machine embroidery for the "E.R." (Elizabeth Regina) motif on the imperial robe, creating a stunning visual centerpiece for the series' first season.
Evolution of Royal Style
Elizabeth's wardrobe transitions seamlessly through the decades, from sweet floral dresses in the post-wedding period to the iconic bright-colored coats and matching hats that became her signature for public engagements. Costume designer Michele Clapton deliberately employed blue tones to convey "uniformity and strength" in the Queen's early reign.
Country vs. Formal Attire
The series brilliantly contrasts Elizabeth's country "uniform" of jodhpurs, jackets and silk scarves with her more formal diplomatic ensembles. For Balmoral scenes, designers created seasonal palettes with custom-designed silk scarves, while important speeches called for vibrant statement colors like lime green to "highlight her confidence."
Character Through Costume
Princess Margaret's wardrobe stands in deliberate contrast to Elizabeth's, described as "more daring and racy" even in formal settings. This distinction appears vividly in evening wear scenes, with Margaret often in off-shoulder designs while Elizabeth maintains modest elegance.
Political Fashion Statements
Margaret Thatcher's costuming evolves with her political journey, featuring increasingly intense blue tones and sharper silhouettes as her power grows. The electric blue pleated skirt suit worn during the Falklands victory announcement visually reinforces her political triumph.
Diana's Style Journey
Perhaps no character undergoes a more dramatic style evolution than Princess Diana, transitioning from girlish liberty prints as a bride-to-be to the iconic "revenge dress" following her separation. Costume designers Amy and Sidonie Roberts note that "black being usually worn by royals for mourning, this little black dress symbolizes the death of a marriage."
The New Generation
The series uses fashion to distinguish royal newcomers Kate Middleton and Diana as outsiders bringing fresh energy to the monarchy. Diana's 80s-90s casual wear includes the famous Harvard sweatshirt with bike shorts, while Kate embodies 2000s style with striped tops and crystal-embellished low-rise jeans.
Evening Elegance Through the Decades
Royal formal wear transforms across the eras, from Elizabeth's pale green 1950s gown with the Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara to her 1990s pistachio-green organza dress paired with Queen Alexandra's kokoshnik tiara, visually marking the passage of time through royal jewelry and silhouettes.
